Covering Old Whittington and the Hill

Old Whittington climbs the hill north of Chesterfield and is the historic heart of the wider Whittington area, best known for Revolution House on the High Street. It is a short run from our base and we work there throughout the year.

The housing is noticeably older than in New Whittington below, which changes what the jobs look like. Thicker walls, older chimneys, more variation in construction, and heating systems that have been fitted into buildings never designed for them.

We handle boiler repairs and servicing, replacements, central heating work, leaks and emergencies. Quotations are free and prices are agreed before work begins.

Older Buildings, Different Considerations

Old Whittington's housing includes genuinely old stone and brick property alongside Victorian terraces and later infill. The walls are frequently thicker than a standard flue kit is designed for, chimneys are often original, and internal layouts do not always lend themselves to the obvious boiler position.

None of this makes modern heating difficult, but it does mean the survey matters. Turning up on installation day to find the flue kit is too short, or that the intended wall is unsuitable, wastes everybody's time. We check these things when we quote.

Heat loss is the other consideration. Solid-walled properties lose considerably more heat than modern cavity construction, and the radiators fitted decades ago are often undersized for what the rooms actually need. Where a house never quite gets warm, the answer is more often radiator sizing than a bigger boiler, and it is a much cheaper answer.

We also see a good number of older open-vented systems still running here, with a header tank in the loft. Many work perfectly well and there is no urgency to change them, but where the tank is in an uninsulated loft it is worth reviewing before a hard winter.

Old Whittington Call-Outs

The problems we see most in this part of S41.

Flue Kits Too Short for Thick Walls

Easily solved with an extended kit, provided somebody checks before installation day.

Loft Tanks Freezing

Header tanks in poorly insulated lofts. Insulation or a conversion to a sealed system prevents it.

Rooms That Never Warm Up

Undersized radiators in solid-walled rooms. Cheaper to fix than most people expect.

Old Pipework Behind Original Features

Awkward to access, but we work carefully and avoid unnecessary damage.

Why Old Whittington Uses Us

Working in older property well is a matter of patience as much as skill.

  • We survey before we quote. No unpleasant surprises once the old boiler is off the wall.
  • We understand solid walls. Heat loss, flue depth and radiator sizing all handled properly.
  • We work cleanly. Dust sheets, care around original features, and a proper tidy-up.
  • Honest advice on old systems. If your open-vented system has years left, we will say so.

Old Whittington Heating FAQs

My walls are very thick. Can a modern boiler still be fitted?

Yes. It simply needs an extended flue kit, which is a standard item. The important thing is that whoever quotes checks the wall thickness first, which we do as part of the survey.

Is my old open-vented system worth keeping?

Often, yes. If it is working reliably and the tank and pipework are sound, there is no obligation to convert. The main reasons to change are a failing boiler, a freezing loft tank or a desire for better hot water pressure. We will give you an honest assessment rather than pushing a conversion.

Why is one room always freezing?

In a solid-walled property, the radiator in that room is usually too small for its actual heat loss. Replacing the single radiator with a correctly sized one is far cheaper than any change to the boiler and usually solves it completely.

Will you make a mess in an older house?

We work with dust sheets, take care around original features and clear up thoroughly before we leave. Older property deserves a bit more care and we treat it that way.

Do you cover New Whittington and Whittington Moor too?

Yes, all parts of Whittington are within our normal working area.

How much is a quote?

Nothing. Quotations are free and carry no obligation.
